Training and Awareness
Staff Training:
Ensuring that all staff members are well-informed and equipped with the knowledge to recognise, manage, and respond to asbestos-related risks is a crucial aspect of our asbestos management plan. The following highlights the training provided to staff:
- Asbestos Awareness Training: All staff members, from teachers to maintenance personnel, receive comprehensive asbestos awareness training. This training is designed to familiarise them with the potential risks of asbestos exposure, how to identify potential asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), and the importance of adhering to safety protocols.
- Identification and Reporting: Staff members are educated on how to identify and report potential ACMs. They are encouraged to promptly report any suspected ACMs or signs of damage to the designated authorities, ensuring that action can be taken promptly.
- Safe Work Procedures: Training includes information on safe work procedures when working in areas that may contain ACMs. Staff members are educated on how to minimise the risk of disturbance and potential exposure when conducting tasks that could affect asbestos-containing materials.
- Emergency Response: Staff members are trained on the appropriate response in the event of an asbestos-related emergency. This training includes evacuation procedures, communication protocols, and how to provide assistance to students in a calm and organised manner.
- Regular Updates: Asbestos awareness training is not a one-time event. Staff members receive regular updates and refresher courses to stay current with best practices and evolving asbestos management guidelines.
Recommendations to Implement:
- Online Training Modules: Consider developing online training modules that allow staff to conveniently access asbestos awareness training materials. This ensures that even remote or part-time staff can receive the necessary education.
- Role-Specific Training: Tailor training to the specific roles and responsibilities of staff members. Teachers may have different requirements than maintenance personnel, so offering role-specific training can be more effective.
- Incorporate Practical Demonstrations: Include practical demonstrations and exercises as part of the training to ensure that staff can apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations.
- Annual Certification: Implement an annual certification or assessment process to ensure that staff members have retained the knowledge required for safe asbestos management.
Information for Parents:
Parents play a critical role in our school community, and it’s essential that they are well-informed about our asbestos management practices. To provide information and resources for parents, we have developed a comprehensive approach:
- Dedicated Webpage: Create a dedicated section on the school website that contains information related to asbestos management. This webpage includes details about the school’s asbestos management plan, safety measures, and links to relevant resources.
- Informational Brochures: Develop informational brochures or pamphlets that can be distributed to parents during school events, parent-teacher meetings, and registration. These materials summarise key points regarding asbestos management and safety.
- Communication Channels: Utilise various communication channels, such as email newsletters, school apps, and social media, to regularly update parents about asbestos-related matters and any changes in procedures or safety measures.
- Point of Contact: Provide a designated point of contact that parents can reach out to for further information, clarification, or to report any concerns they may have.
Recommendations to Implement:
- Multilingual Resources: Ensure that information and resources are available in multiple languages to accommodate the diverse backgrounds of the school community.
- Parental Feedback Mechanism: Establish a feedback mechanism that allows parents to submit questions and concerns related to asbestos management. Respond promptly to address their queries.
- School Newsletter Column: Dedicate a regular column in the school newsletter to share updates and information about asbestos management. This keeps parents informed on an ongoing basis.
- Collaboration with Parent-Teacher Association (PTA): Collaborate with the PTA to disseminate information and engage parents in discussions about asbestos management. The PTA can play a key role in promoting awareness.
By implementing these recommendations, RGGS can enhance the training and awareness of staff and ensure that parents have access to the information they need to feel confident in the school’s asbestos management practices, ultimately contributing to a safer and more informed school community.
